Perhaps the most important and longest overdue new feature in PHP 7 is Scalar Type Hints. Getting this feature into PHP was a long, arduous and surprisingly drama-filled process. In this talk, you'll learn about the major issues that made them take so long and produced such division, and then hear the true story of how, at long last, they made their way through the PHP RFC process. More importantly, you'll also learn about the end result: what Scalar Type Hints in PHP 7 are, how they work in detail, and how you can use them in practice to write safer, more robust PHP code. This will be illustrated with examples from real applications, where possible.
